Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers available to those who have the ability to instruct children and young adults in subjects that lead them to success. However, every state has different requirements for becoming a teacher, and Virginia is no exception.

Licensure Requirements

In Virginia, applicants for teaching licensure must be at least 18 years of age and have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning. In addition, the candidate must possess good moral character and must obtain passing scores on the professional teacher assessment required by the Board of Education. Proficiency in technology is also a requirement for those seeking a teaching license in the state of Virginia.

Good Moral Character

Part VII of the Virginia Licensing Code states that a teaching license can be revoked or denied for the following reasons:

•Conviction of any felony;
•Conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude;
•Conduct with direct or detrimental effect on the health, welfare, discipline or morale of students;
•Misapplication or failure to account for school funds or property;
•Knowingly and willingly compromise the outcome of an athletic competition;
•Other just cause determined by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Types of Licenses

Virginia offers different types of licensing for teachers. A Provisional License is a nonrenewable license valid for up to three years that is issued to an individual with allowable deficiencies that do not allow them to obtain full licensure. Individuals with a provisional license must complete the requirements for a regular license within the validity of the provisional license. A Collegiate Professional License is a five-year, renewable license issued to those who have completed all requirements for a teaching license. Postgraduate Professional License is for those who currently hold a Collegiate Professional License and who have earned an appropriate graduate degree. A Technical Professional License is for those who have earned a high school diploma and demonstrated proficiency and skills through occupational experience, and who have completed a specialized professional studies credit course that cover a variety of technical subjects. A School Manager license is a five-year, renewable license that allows teachers ot administer non-instructional responsibilities. Candidates must hold a baccalaureate degree and have three years of successful managerial experience. A Pupil Personnel Services License includes an endorsement for guidance counselors, school psychologists, and other student service positions. This license does not require teaching experience. A Division Superintendent License requires candidates to hold a Master’s Degree and meet specific requirements in order to be eligible to act as a superintendent.
